I worked for a non-profit and ended up developing my own sql application, then web application. It took much effort and would have loved to know about salesforce. From my experiences most non-profits have very little knowledge of tech and usually contract. Unfortunately many contractors do not have the time to truly invest in organizing that non-profit and the non-profit doesn't have the funds to invest in tech to truly get organized. So what ends up happening is a large mess of issues. In order to do this type of work you must have a soft spot for the non-profit and what they are trying to achieve (definately not for the money).
Techsoup was one of my favorites.
