OpenID How-To

Let's pretend that your name is Shrek Ratatouille and that you want to set up an OpenID using Techcafeteria's OpenId server.

  1. Browse to openid.techcafeteria.com, or choose "Register" from the OpenId menu on your left.
  2. You'll be presented with a screen similar to this (I'm still tweaking things):
    Registration Screen
  3. Fill in your name, a password, and confirm the password, type in the Captcha numbers for confirmation, then click "Sign Up". This creates your account and signs you in:
    OpenID Welcome Screen
  4. Now you can click on "My Profile" in the grey menu in order to access the profile screen:
    Profile Form
  5. Save your changes and then pay close attention to the home screen, as it has two key pieces of information:
    • 1. Your OpenID
    • Your OpenID
    • 1. The code required to make some other page your openid, instead.
    • Code to move ID with
  6. Next, you'll want to use your OpenID. So go to the Tech Café blog. Once there, enter your OpenID into the Openid field in the right-hand sidebar and hit
    Blog Openid field
  7. This will take you to the OpenID server, where you'll need to log in using the username and password that you set up earlier. Note! This is your OpenID provider's system, not the blog or servivce that you're signing onto.
    Provider's Login Screen
  8. Once logged in, you'll be presented with a list of the profile feeds that the system either requests or requires. On the Techcafeteria blog, nothing is required, but nickname, email and full name are requested. You can uncheck any of these that you don't want to share. You can also choose to allow this login once, forever, or change your mind completely. If you think it likely that you'll leave further comments on Techcafeteria's Blog, choose "Allow Forever" (you can always remove the entry later).
    Confirmation Screen
  9. This takes you back to the Blog, where you can see that you're logged in on the sidebar.

  10. Find an article that you want to leave a comment on, or pick one of the OpenID articles and leave a simple "I was here testing" comment. Comments are moderated on my blog (due to spammers), so you can also indicate "don't publishj" and I won't approve it.
  11. When you come back to the blog in the future, you can choose "Login" from the sidebar, and then ignore the user name and pasword prompts, but just fill in your OpenID. This takes you to the management page on my Wordpress blog, but you can click "View Site" to get back to the entries. There is no need to add anything to your profile.

  12. Finally, now that you have one or more relationships with services established via OpenID, you can mange them, as well as your profile, by logging back in to the OpenID Server. There you can review, delete or change your status with those sites, or update your profile information. You can also grab tha code for setting up an alternate address on a web server you feel more associated with.
  13. Find an article that you want to leave a comment on, or pick one of the OpenID articles and leave a simple "I was here testing" comment. Comments are moderated on my blog (due to spammers), so you can also indicate "don't publishj" and I won't approve it. The comment screen will have an OpenID box that you can use to log in:
